I can only speak for Dutch politics, and it goes like this: After the influx of refugees from war-zones politicians like Wilders and Baudet have been fanning the flames of fear to harvest votes from those afraid of honest competition. Our right-wing parties have been flirting with the same rhetoric, eyeing that very same pool of voters, thus the current shift to the right. We have quite some good push-back from our left-wing opposition, but they don’t get enough votes because we have a very large group of older population that does not like change and having to prove they are worth their privilege.
