Today I talked to Strangers

Intensive outing today, 2 hunt n gathers at grocery stores before and after the Royal Colombian Hospital.

With lunch at Fresgo’s on King George – where I was shocked to see “Fox News” on one of the tv screens – the rest on sports.

As far as I knew, Fox News is not broadcasting in Canada because it is not news under the legal meaning in Canada – which is reality – not wild claims and propaganda.

Anyway, at the Chain Grocery Store I ended up having eye contact and verbal pleasantries exchanged with several strangers.

At the check out line, me and another adult daughter exchanged Mom management tricks n tips.

Then, in the line for customer service – to return an item – there was not a proper line

the line on the floor that said line here was empty and people were lined up at the counter in a wiggly jagged line

Mom asked an adult woman and a man we both thought was her Dad if they were in line

they were. so we got behind them

I made a joke about lining up is what Canadians are known for

and the adult woman with the glaring modest headscarf smiled at me and told me what it was like to shop in other countries

so until it was her turn, we laughed with each other about how customs vary in the shops

the man we thought was her father commented to my Mom how long it was going to take – 5 customers and 1 clerk on

then, one of my favorite clerks showed up and walked down the counter, and done, done done

it was the woman’s turn that I was talking to, and she didn’t even break stride

“She’s one of my faves,” I pointed out to the Man “look at her – dispatch, done, the line up disappeared!”

and the original clerk was finally dealing with the next customer.

He didn’t join the woman and we realized that they were not together.

I drifted towards the actual line up spot, in case the other clerk was done sooner and before another line cluster formed.

My Mom waved me back, she was waiting for this clerk – not that her return was complicated.

She’d gotten a cheese from a shelf that said $5.00, but it rang in at $6 something, turned it out was 5 if you bought 2 cheeses as a bulk deal. I thought at 5 it was pricey for the size and had too much packaging.

no problem, returned and refunded from the bill

I told the clerk that I loved her new hair, it was a brassy red, but not a kool aid colour, so age appropriate (leaving out that part.)

anyway, out in the world

I can say that Chappelle excels at introducing layered, legitimately angry ideas about race in America into a narrative that feels casual and inclusive, without losing the comedy, writes Johanna Schneller.
