Which I think is the heart of the issue, it should work for everyone regardless.

The idea of political quantification is a slippery slope indeed and perpetuates the myth that people are self made rather than made by exploitation of others – labour and knowledge.
Being a leader is a balance of leading and listening and one of the hallmarks of leadership is not surrounding yourself with people who agree with you.
