ElvisWorld: Genealogy and Gypies

The idea of an oppressed culture having famous members is a time honored way of drawing attention to the group, but I think that this effort to make Elvis a gypsy is a bit internet-y since it’s from 2008 but making the rounds again in 2016,  and a dubious one because being able to determine these things requires governments and more usually churches that tracked births and deaths and oppressed nomads tended to not want to register with establishment….But hey, we are all bits of other people from other places in time.

And certainly, there will be people who leave a socially marginalized group and pass for whatever the mainstream is. Often it is done by families to avoid persecution through the generations and gentrification of names. Elvis didn’t do a lot of costume movies…

Elvis Presley was 50% Gladys and 50% Vernon, meaning only 25% of each grandparent to less and less each generation before. so whatever the ancestors 500 years ago were, don’t make much difference to a nation of immigrants where he was born; whatever Elvis’ ethnicity make up, and it’s not a meaningful measure, his cultural identity was America.

Elvis Presley, having been born to the poorest class he could have been, could easily have run for president if he’d gotten that into his head for real and not just a badge.

Elvis Presley was the embodiment of America, dream turned nightmare, the lesson of consequences. The king died on the throne, long live the king.

Elvis Presley was publicly a Christian, Pentecostal – but he explored a lot of religions and wore a lot of symbols, his inner circle was Christians and Jews and California Spiritualism.

This curious portrait is Elvis posing with his Jewish Neighbors, he worked the Sabbath for them – and here – the older teens pose with pipes to look adult…and the Star of David given to Elvis by Linda Thompson…. then, there’s the Gypsy Concert Suit and the Indian Dreamcatcher suit.. Elvis was rather multi-cultural in his stage wear….

Our Daily Elvis – Elvis donated a presidential yacht to the St. Jude’s Hospital

Elvis Presley turns over the papers for the S.S. Potomac, former presidential yacht of the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude Hospital February 14, 1964 in Long Beach, CA. Presley purchased the yacht to keep it from being scrapped. Thomas accepted the boat for St. Jude, a non-sectarian project dedicated to finding cures for catastrophic diseases of children. It is hoped that the boat will be sold as soon as possible and the money used in research for children's diseases. Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker, is in the background.
