God on the Witness Stand

Why an Indian lawyer tried to sue God

Indian lawyer Chandan Kumar Singh recently stunned many Indians when he tried to sue popular Hindu god Ram.

Mr Singh told the BBC that he took the action because he felt “Lord Ram was unjust to his wife Sita”, and he wanted a court in the eastern state of Bihar to “acknowledge this fact”.

“Ram’s treatment of Sita shows that women were not respected even in ancient times. I am aware that the case may sound ridiculous to many, but we have to discuss this part of our ancient religious history. I will file a case again because I really believe that Indians have to acknowledge that Ram mistreated Sita.”

In India, a God is called to court to account for how he treated his wife, as a means to offer the women of India respect.

Lawsuits against God

Ernie Chambers

In the U.S. state of Nebraska, State Senator Ernie Chambers filed a suit in 2008 against God, seeking a permanent injunction against God’s harmful activities, as an effort to publicize the issue of public access to the court system.[1] The suit was dismissed because God could not be properly notified, not having an address. The Judge stated, “Given that this court finds that there can never be service effectuated on the named defendant this action will be dismissed with prejudice“.[1]

The senator, assuming God to be singularand all-knowing, responded “The court itself acknowledges the existence of God. A consequence of that acknowledgement is a recognition of God’s omniscience … Since God knows everything, God has notice of this lawsuit.”[1][2] Chambers filed the lawsuit in response to another lawsuit that he considers to be frivolous and inappropriate.[3]

Pavel M

A Romanian prisoner, identified as Pavel M, serving 20 years after being convicted of murder, filed a lawsuit against the Romanian Orthodox Church, as God’s representatives in Romania, for failing to keep him from the Devil, essentially stating that his baptism had been a binding contract.[10] The suit was dismissed because the defendant was neither an individual nor a company, and was not subject to the civil court of law’s jurisdiction.[11]
