Music: Authentic vs Manufactured

Somehow Duran Duran vs Spandu Ballet lacks the passion of Elvis v The Beatles or even The Beatles vs The Monkees eh?

In 2015, both Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet are slated to release new albums. This article examines the dimensions of their rivalry in 2015.  radiocremebrulee.com
  •  Stephanie Kountouros No. Not at all like the Beatles Vs the Monkees. The Monkees were a TV show. (Though I did like them.) The Beatles were consummate artists.
  • And Spandau FTW. Natch.
  • hey hey. the Monkees  learned to be able to play.
  •  They learned to be able to… “play.”
  •  ah. you and standards. lol
  •  You’re one to talk! Anyway, I love me some Monkees, they’re just not in the same league.
  •  I was a Duranie LOL
  •  There’s a few Duran squared that I like. “For MLK.” “The Chauffeur,” …what else… “no no! Notorious !” But that one has to do with my last name…
  •  “The Chauffeur,” is my total fave
  • it sucks that the divide line is real music is what boys like and manufactured is what girls get.
    ^ I don’t understand this sentence.
  • art is what boys do and crafts is what girls do – it’s like “real music” appeals to boys while what is targetted for girls is manufactured
  •  Tell it to Sarah McLaughlin. Or Siouxsie Sioux. Or Nina Simone.
  •  I think that is a public thing, not a me thing (Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, Tanya Tucker, Sheena Easton, Olivia Newton-John, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, kd lang, Melissa Etheridge…)
  •  I think it is a changing thing, and certainly nuanced! But yes, there’s an entire conversation here about women and people of color and music and commodification, eh?

When Duran Duran arrived in North America – they were hailed as the new Fab Five over The Beatles Fab Four being Elvis impersonators.
Queen cut their own unique swath – Freddie sashaying around the world in Drag breaking Free.

Men at Work following on The Bee Gees, Rick Springfield and Olivia Newton-John and Andy Gibb.
The manufactured wave continued with New Kids on the Block and later NSYNC copying the authenic INXS from australia.
