Elvis’ Blue Hawaii was to help create middle class tourism to Hawaii from Mainland USA…
his Aloha world broadcast from Hawaii was 3 days shy of the 100th anniversary of the last monarch of Hawaii….
On Jan. 17, 1893, Queen Lili`uokalani of the independent kingdom of Hawai`i was overthrown as she was arrested at gunpoint by U.S. Marines. American businessmen…, particularly sugar plantation owners, led by Lorrin Thurston, had supported annexation of the islands to the United States. The Queen had been working on a new constitution that would restore voting rights to native Hawaiians.
A new provisional government was installed with Sanford B. Dole as president. The troops had landed the day before, providing support “to protect American lives and property.” In 1898, Pres. William McKinley signed a joint resolution of Congress authorizing the annexation. For lessons and a film, see: http://bit.ly/1CyzqQc Image: Corbis
Moment in time: Jan. 14, 1973 — Elvis performs global concert Aloha from Hawaii
It was Nixon in China that inspired Elvis in Hawaii. In Feb. 1972, when Elvis P…resley’s manager watched the U.S. President speak from China live via satellite, Colonel Tom Parker realized the same technology could bring the King to the world. Eleven months later, to the thunderous overture Also Sprach Zarathustra, Presley strode and sneered his way onto the stage of the Honolulu International Center in a bejewelled white jumpsuit, beginning at 12:30 a.m. local time so that hundreds of millions in dozens of other countries could watch the show at a reasonable hour. The first single-site concert carried live via satellite to the world, the show itself was lacklustre – at 38, Presley was already deep into Demerol and Dilaudid. But it pointed the way to a future in which all the world’s people might be stitched together by one man and his music. — Simon Houpt
