Grendel (1986)

beams of light
separating my realm of dark
forever in night

an impermeable membrane
shutting out all joy
efficient dragonsbane

behind the light beams
is all that I desire
my world rips at the seams

the light sears my eyes
I flail about for help
i die
and no one cries

Grendel John Gardner

I read this book after my grade 12 literature teacher, Mike Kerry recommended it to me.

I wrote that poem and showed it to him.

He kept giving me extra marks and I stopped showing him my poems.

I wasn’t writing for credit, I just wanted his feedback
