My Dog and Pony Show

Many years ago, I worked for an adult video distribution company.

The owner of the company was an interesting character – his daughter was in Catholic School.

Since the boss was divorced and had custody, he used to bring his daughter into the office portion of the offices and leave her with me as a role model. Big sister mentor sort of thing, mostly because his ex-wife was what in movies, would be a Plastic.

one day, my boss came to work very smug and told me about his daughter’s debate club.

He was pleased with himself for having bested a 12 year old on the issue of whales in captivity and he took the easy side of being against it.

So I said to him, “$20 says I can argue for captivity and use the bible.”

Now, going against him in a debate was enough, but he was too intrigued when I added the extra challenge for me, given my anti-religious stance.

He pulled out a $20 and said “you’re on.”

“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

he stopped smiling and handed me the $20.

it’s not a good book when it lets one justify crappulant, callous and high handed behaviour.

this whale was killed to make a sculpture and how many whales have been doomed since?

when this particular employer learned that I was a lesbian. I was fired.

it was 1992 and legal to do so.

He came into my work area with a person I didn’t know in tow

he handed me a cheque at 15 minutes to 5 pm and said I had 15 minutes to train my replacement and that he didn’t want me near his daughter.

I looked at him and said “John, Jackie is 12, not my type and 12. You are why I am a lesbian, so you’ve already infected her.”

then I looked at my replacement and said “This is what he’s doing to me and you’re next.”

then I walked out.

I was fired effectively – constructively dismissed at my next job, where it was still legal to discriminate against people because of their private lives.
